David Perry

Health & Safety Consultant / SwimWay Instructor

I studied at the University of North London and graduated in 1997 with a BA (Hons) Degree in Leisure & Tourism Management (specialising in Sport & Recreation Management).  I then spent around 10 years working in Leisure Centres, starting as a Lifeguard and Swimming Teacher, then a Duty Manager and eventually a General Manager.  After this, I managed 2 different private Swim Schools over a period of 5 years and then spent 7 years working as a Regional Development Officer for the STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association).

As a General Manager, I gained much invaluable experience within the Leisure sector.  As a Regional Development Officer, I worked with many Swim Schools/Clubs, Leisure Centres and private Health Clubs across London & the South East, assisting them in all areas of their Swimming Programme, including Health & Safety management.

In 2001, I became a National Swimming & Lifesaving Tutor and have been training and examining Swimming Teachers, First Aiders and Lifesavers since this date.  In 2011, I set up my own company “Aquatic Training Courses”, which provides professional aquatic training courses and consultancy services to the Leisure Industry in the UK and abroad.

Within the last few years, I have had the pleasure of coming across Mr. Dan Pastor from SwimWay, and over the years I have trained many of his staff with the Pool Emergency Procedures lifesaving qualification and the Level 2 Award & Certificate in Teaching Swimming qualifications.  I have also worked closely with Dan to produce Pool Safety Operating Procedures (including Risk Assessments) for all the SwimWay sites.  As a result of this involvement, it gives me great pleasure to be a part of SwimWay as a Health & Safety Consultant as well as my teaching duties.

This role will involve me providing regular, site-specific Health & Safety training for all SwimWay staff, as well as monthly inspections of all SwimWay sites to monitor Health & Safety arrangements and procedures.  It is envisaged that this role will help to ensure that SwimWay continues to operate to the highest standards of health and safety within the private swim school sector.

Along with my health & safety and instructor training duties, I am an avid instructor too!  Along with SwimWay, I teach at various other swim schools, one at which I am the head coach.  I have been teaching babies, children and adults to swim for over 15 years now, and have not lost an inch of passion for the work!
