FAQ: What Can I Do To Prepare My Baby For Swimming Lessons?

Many questions are asked when someone books their first parent & baby swimming lessons with us. Most of all, we hear “What can I do to prepare my baby for swimming lessons?”. An excellent question!

Positive Experience

The most important part of preparing your baby for swimming lessons is to give them positive experiences in the water. You want them to enjoy their aquatic experiences. Thus, they can feel more comfortable as they transition to actual swimming lessons.

Games

One idea is to get into the bath with your child at bath time, play games, sing songs, bring toys and have fun. Some parents also find it works to buy fun swimming outfits including some fabulous Pink Peppa Pig ensembles we saw recently!

Watering Can

You can also slowly get them comfortable with the idea of water on their head and face. Again, to instil a positive feeling with the experience, this can be done in a playful, fun way. Toy watering cans are always a popular option. Showing the child the gentle rain-like quality of the water exiting the can first. Then pouring on hands, arms, shoulders, slowly working towards the head and face.

Slowly does it! Make sure your child is always comfortable and seeing the experience as positive. Sing songs and have fun! Before you know it, you will be able to play some gentle splashing games in the bath (watching the spillage of course!).

If there is any resistance, don’t fret! Just do what you can to ensure a positive experience, and we’ll handle the rest when the lessons start.

What To Wear In Classes

SwimWay classes require all children under the age of 3 years to wear the double nappy system. This consists of an aqua nappy (such as Huggies) that can be bought in most supermarkets/chemists. Over the top of the aqua nappy goes the tight-fitting Happy Nappy. The Happy Nappy can be bought on-line at www.splashabout.com and from JoJo Maman Bébé.
