FAQ: The Role of Parents and Guardians in SwimWay Lessons

At SwimWay, we believe in creating a safe and nurturing environment for children of all ages to learn to swim. The role of parents and guardians in swimWay lessons is crucial, depending on the age and specific needs of the child.

Parent & Baby Classes: Safety, Progression, and Bonding

In our parent and baby classes, having a parent or guardian in the water is essential for several reasons:

  1. Safety: Young children, especially babies, require constant supervision and support in the water. A parent or guardian can provide immediate assistance and support, ensuring the child’s safety at all times.
  2. Progression: When parents or guardians are actively involved, they can better understand the techniques being taught. Thus allowing them to reinforce these skills during bath time or pool visits outside of lessons. This consistent practice accelerates the child’s progression in learning to swim.
  3. Bonding: Water activities can be a wonderful way for parents and children to bond. Sharing this experience builds trust and comfort, making the child feel more secure and relaxed in the water. This emotional connection often translates into a more positive and effective learning experience.

Children’s 1:1 and 1:2 Lessons: Fostering Independence

For slightly older children, our 1:1 and 1:2 lessons are designed to foster independence and build a trusting relationship between instructor and child:

  1. Building Trust: Our approach focuses on creating a bond between the instructor and the child. This trust is crucial for the child to feel confident and secure. Thus enabling them to follow instructions and learn more effectively.
  2. Minimising Distractions: Having just the instructor and the child in the water minimises distractions and potential overcrowding of the pool. This allows for a more focused and personalised teaching environment, ensuring each child receives the attention they need to progress.
  3. Nervous Children: In some cases, a child may be too nervous to get in the water alone. As a last resort, we may ask a parent or guardian to join for one or two lessons. This is always instructor-led and aims to help the child transition to feeling comfortable with the instructor. However, we limit this to avoid overcrowding and ensure the focus remains on the child-instructor relationship.

Following Instructor Guidance

Our instructors are trained professionals with extensive experience in teaching children of all ages and abilities. It is important for parents and guardians to follow their guidance at all times. This will ensure the best possible learning experience for the child. For children’s lessons, instructors may even ask parents to move out of sight for a few minutes to help the child focus better. Trusting our instructors and adhering to their instructions will greatly benefit your child’s progress and confidence in the water.

Advanced Children’s Lessons

For older, more advanced children, our lessons are designed to further refine their swimming skills and build endurance. In these sessions, the instructor often teaches from outside the water. Thus providing detailed instructions and demonstrations while observing the child’s technique. This approach allows the instructor to offer precise corrections and advanced training tips. The role of the parent or guardian shifts to one of support from the viewing area or at home, ensuring the child feels encouraged and motivated. Parents can help by reinforcing the instructor’s guidance during recreational practice times and celebrating their child’s progress and achievements.

In summary, The role of parents and guardians in SwimWay lessons is tailored to meet the specific needs of the child, ensuring safety, progression, and a positive learning experience. Whether it’s through the supportive presence in parent and baby classes or fostering independence in our children’s lessons, our goal is to create a nurturing environment for every young swimmer.
