Declaring Medical & SEN Details For Safer Swimming
At SwimWay, safety is one of our biggest priorities. Clients declaring medical & SEN details is an important part of this. Swimming lessons are a fun and enriching experience, but they must also be conducted as safely and inclusively as possible. Ensuring this starts with clear communication about each swimmer’s medical and special educational needs.
Health Conditions
It is extremely important to declare any health conditions, such as asthma, epilepsy, allergies, or heart conditions, that may pose risks while swimming. Informing the teacher of such conditions ensures they take essential precautions.
All SwimWay teachers undergo crucial lifesaving skills and refresher courses at the start of each term. These include CPR, safety breathing techniques, and first-aid care for babies, children, and adults. First aid kits are provided at each of our facilities, and AEDs are available at some venues for heart-related emergencies.
Adapting to Medical Conditions
Teachers tailor lessons to suit the needs of swimmers with specific health concerns. For instance:
- Allergies: Adjustments may be made to ensure the pool environment is safe.
- Injuries or Surgeries: Teachers can adapt lessons to avoid overworking certain areas, such as limiting shoulder rotation after surgery.
- Intensity Levels: Sessions can be paced with more frequent breaks to prevent overexertion.
By understanding these requirements, SwimWay ensures both the safety and comfort of our swimmers.
Special Educational Needs (SEN)
In addition to medical details, it’s equally important for SwimWay teachers to be aware of any special educational needs (SEN). Children or adults with autism, ADHD, sensory sensitivities, or other conditions may benefit greatly from tailored approaches.
Here’s how we cater to students with SEN:
- Personalised Teaching Techniques: Our teachers adapt their communication and instructions to suit the learner’s preferred style, whether it’s visual demonstrations or breaking tasks into smaller steps.
- Patience and Support: Teachers work at a pace that’s comfortable for the swimmer, ensuring a positive and enjoyable experience.
- Sensory Considerations: Adjustments to the environment, such as reducing noise or using specific equipment, can help create a calm and supportive atmosphere.
By declaring SEN details, you enable our instructors to create a welcoming and tailored learning environment that meets the needs of every swimmer.
Confidentiality Matters
At SwimWay, we deeply respect your privacy. All medical and SEN information shared with us is handled with the utmost confidentiality. This information is shared only with the instructor/s working directly with the swimmer and is used solely to ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming experience.
Why It’s Important to Declare
Transparent communication and declaring medical and SEN details isn’t just about safety—it’s about building trust between swimmers, their families, and our instructors. By understanding the unique needs of every individual, we can ensure that swimming lessons remain inclusive, effective, and enjoyable for everyone.
