SwimWay STA Safety Award Training 2019

Every term, SwimWay instructors attend our pre-term staff meetings. These sessions are not only for operational concerns. The most important part of these meetings is the health and safety refresher course held by our resident H&S consultant David Perry. In addition to these termly courses, our instructors also undergo the legally required Safety Award Training every two years. Again, hosted by Mr David Perry.

Venue

This year’s training was hosted at the SwimWay Kew Gardens facilities. This venue has been recently renovated with brand new changing rooms, toilet and shower. Thus, it was perfect for the group training session.

Importance of Training

One can never underestimate the value of this type of training. Therefore, keeping our instructors up to date and constantly refreshed on health and safety matters is of utmost importance.

The main topics covered over the day were:

  • The Pool & Pool Safety
  • Basic Life Support
  • First Aid
  • Pool Rescue Techniques
  • Spinal Injuries
  • Legislature

Obviously, with a full day of training, these are just overarching headings. Each topic delved deeply into a multitude of aspects. From risk assessments, NOP & EOP, CPR, to specific incidents & injuries, safety equipment and how to use them, etc. The safety award training list is quite extensive! Needless to say, at the end of the day the teachers were left tired, but well-informed.

Positive Feedback

Following the completion of the course, our trainer David Perry had this to say:

Another successful and enjoyable training day with the SwimWay team. All instructors demonstrated competence in the practical and theoretical elements of the course. Additionally, strong results achieved in the new Multiple Choice Question Paper at the end of the day. Such a positive, professional and bright group! Thus, It was a pleasure delivering the Safety Award for Teachers course for SwimWay again. Congratulations to you all, good luck with your teaching and, dare I say it, “Feliz Natao”!

Until our next term meeting on Sunday 12th of January!
