Autumn 2022 Staff Training – SwimWay Swimming School
Another term begins! As usual, we kicked off the autumn term 2022 with staff training. Our termly health & safety and operational training sessions happen on the first Sunday of every term. This year we’ve had to move to a larger venue to accommodate our rapidly growing team of amazing instructors!
These meetings are important for us so we can establish our identity and team spirit and be able to react in case of any emergencies.
Operations
SwimWay MD, Dan Pastor kicked off the autumn term 2022 staff training by greeting everyone and introducing our new starters this term Hannah, Laker, Ane, Alessandro and Maria. He took the team through operational procedures including emergency contacts and procedures, out of hours communications, office team structure and general guidance/reminders. He then spoke about the company growth and plans for the coming year. It is a difficult time for everyone economically. But if we all work hard together, we can overcome any hardships!
Teacher Guidance & Methodology
SwimWay Head of Swimming, Tamsin Watt then took over to discuss teacher guidance and methodology. She spoke about the importance of making a positive impact at the start of term, not only with students but parents too! She emphasised the importance of ensuring instructors keep an eye on schedules, 1:2 lesson pairings and children’s assessments are always up to date. Following this, Tamsin spoke about this term’s methodology focus: hands on teaching techniques. SwimWay has produced a series of videos that take any new starters as well as current instructors through best teaching practices and Tamsin always makes sure the team watches these often. This term she spoke at length about incorporating more hands-on teaching in the lessons.
Health & Safety
SwimWay Health & Safety Trainer Dave Perry then took over, running the practical CPR refresher course. He took the team through two scenarios of what could happen for either an infant, child or an adult. The team practiced CPR and basic first aid related to each scenario. (drowning/basic first aid, emergency numbers and procedures, updates on regulations two person CPR
Two-person CPR is usually practiced with at least three changeovers. This was to simulate a real-life incident where instructors would need to do this until the paramedics arrive (average response time for LAS presently slightly over 7 minutes).
He then took the team through important reminders on NOP and EAP procedures at the SwimWay venues, as well as emergency numbers and updates on health and safety regulations.
Socialising!
The team finished off the day with a drink at the local. It is always important for everyone to take the time to mingle. This creates a friendly and sociable environment for the company. It is sometimes tricky to get together as a team. Our instructors and office team operate in so many different locations. These staff meetings allow for everyone to touch base and maintain relationships.
Here’s to a successful Autumn Term ahead!
